About

Alexandra Kern is a documentary filmmaker from New Orleans whose work explores America’s complex cultural fabric. Her films craft living portraits of real communities and always search for honest, intimate moments. The rhythms of the South and growing up with a costume designer mother and a party planner father deeply inform her creative approach.

Her most recent short documentary, Stud Country (2024), is currently on its festival circuit. The film premiered at Full Frame Film Festival winning the Grand Jury Prize for Best Short Documentary. The film went on to screen at Tribeca Film Festival winning the Tribeca Challenger Spirit Award. Stud Country is available online via the Los Angeles Times and WePresent.

Kern’s directorial debut, short documentary Wild Magnolias (2023), received the Jazz & Heritage Community Partnership Grant and screened at festivals across the country. The film now holds a permanent place in the historical archives of the New Orleans Jazz Museum and the New Orleans Museum of Art. It is also available online at Al Jazeera, Short of the Week and Aoen Magazine.
